* except for와 except는 “…을 제외하고”의 의미를 공통적으로 지니나, except for는 전체문장과 관련, except는 명사구와 관련 있다. 따라서 except for는 문두, 문중, 문미에 다 사용할 수 있으나, 문두에 사용할 때는 반드시 <Except for + 명사, S V O>의 형태를 띠게 된다. 문미에 사용되는 경우에도 <except for + 명사> 앞에 ,를 사용하기도 한다.
